Powder for 45 70

I remember reading somewhere that it's an excellent powder for 45-70 in normal loads. Be interesting to see how it does for you Guy. Jun 7, 2021.8iowa. I load 65 grains of GOEX "cartridge" black powder in Remington 45-70 cases. I drop the charges down a 24" drop tube on a Lyman #55 bp measure. Next I place a .030 Walters wad over the powder and compress it about 2/10 inch - just enough for the seating depth of the bullet (this will involve a little math).BTW - proper bullet size, situation 1 and 2 are issues I've experienced with a new Pedersoli 45/70 Rolling Block. I "Beagled" a Lyman 405-457 mold and got .4585 bullets. I use an alloy with a hardness of BHN 10 (30:1). I use Goex FFg black powder or IMR 4759 smokeless. I only have a 100 yard range for practice, but compete at 200 yards.

Fill the case with enough powder to be slightly compressed. Alliant Reloader 7 is by far the best and most accurate 45-70 loading powder. You need a powder that fills the entire case while providing safe pressure, the right burn rate, and best velocities. That is Reloader 7 for 300gr up through 500gr bullets.
